Focus Consultants helping to determine the future of the iconic Vulcan XH558

Nottingham-based Focus Consultants has been working with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust to undertake an options appraisal to identify the best possible future for the iconic aircraft Avro Vulcan XH558, The Spirit of Great Britain.
The Vulcan was flown by the RAF for 33 years between 1960 and 1993. She was built to deliver Britain’s first atomic bomb, ‘Blue Danube’, as a deterrent against Soviet aggression during the Cold War. Through fundraising and restoration work, widely believed to be the most complex technical heritage project ever undertaken, she was returned to flight in 2007 and has since performed in numerous air shows across the UK and Europe.
However, for a range of technical reasons, the aircraft is coming towards the end of its flying life. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which owns and operates the aircraft, is keen that there will be continuing public benefits once she has stopped flying in the form of education and inspirational activities around the aircraft aimed at helping to solve the shortage of engineers and technical staff that is currently a significant challenge for British businesses.
In recognition of this, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust has been awarded £10,000 funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Start Up Programme to identify the most effective future role for the best conserved large British aircraft of her era after she is grounded.
For the last three months, Focus has been working with the Trust to examine a range of options which will allow the Vulcan to maintain the value endowed upon it by the public and enable her to continue to deliver substantial public benefit.
Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said: “We are thrilled the Heritage Lottery Fund has recognised the potential of Vulcan XH558 to bring value to our economy and pleasure to the public even when she is no longer flying.  We have been working with Focus to look at how XH558 can continue inspiring young people with the excitement of engineering and innovation, helping to solve the UK’s technical skills shortage.”
Associate at Focus, Heather Frecklington, said: “The Vulcan has incredible significance, as a powerful reminder of the knife-edge tension of the Cold War, an innovative engineering triumph and a symbol that continues to pull on the heart strings of the British public. It is essential that her revered position is maintained once she has been permanently grounded and is not lost for future generations.  At Focus we are proud to be working with the Trust to identify an option that not only ensures her survival in outstanding condition, but also ensures she continues to inspire and benefit the public who have shown boundless support for her hitherto.”
The Vulcan is currently based at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster.
Focus, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary during 2014, offers a range of services in the heritage and development sector, including funding and economic development, regeneration expertise, energy consultancy and chartered surveying services.
Since its creation in 1994, Focus has secured more than £925 million of grant assistance and delivered more than £1 billion of projects and programmes - making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.
It has worked on a range of high-profile projects in the arts, heritage and tourism sector, including some of the major museums across the UK, and important historical and ecclesiastical sites.
As well as its head office at Phoenix Business Park in Nottingham, it also has branches in London, Leicester, and Boston and Aubourn in Lincolnshire.

J Tomlinson in the driving seat as world’s fastest car relocates

Image ©Coventry Transport Museum/Mark Radford
Nottingham-based contractor J Tomlinson was in the driving seat of a delicate relocation operation to move the world’s fastest car Thrust SSC into its new home as part of a development project at Coventry Transport Museum.
Thrust SSC is being given pride of place in an all-new ‘Biffa Award Land Speed Record Gallery’, which is set to open in early 2015.
As part of the daring relocation manoeuvre, the 54ft long, 10-tonne supersonic car was hoisted over the rear gates of the museum, before being transported to a low-loader lorry and driven at walking pace around the outskirts of the building. The vehicle, which measures almost the same length as two double-decker buses laid end-to-end, was then once again lifted in the air on a crane and placed into position just outside the new gallery, at the front of the museum, before being manoeuvred into the brand new exhibition space. Thrust SSC’s predecessor Thrust 2 had been moved in the same way just minutes before.
J Tomlinson is the contractor for part of the £8.5 million redevelopment of Coventry Transport Museum, which got underway in April this year and is due to be completed by Summer 2015, when 12 of the museum’s 14 galleries will have been transformed, giving visitors a fresh perspective on Coventry’s fascinating transport history.
Martin Gallagher, construction managing director at J Tomlinson, the company tasked with managing the base build works and moving the Thrust vehicles, said: “Transferring these two very special cars into their new home was not only a unique operation for J Tomlinson, it also marked a key point in the extension and refurbishment of Coventry Transport Museum.
“Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC are the two fastest cars in the world, and we are very pleased to have been part of the team that has created a new, prominent gallery for them so that they can be displayed in all their glory. We will now begin work on the area that these cars previously occupied, as J Tomlinson continues the development of the home of this internationally significant transport collection.”
Gary Hall, chief executive at Culture Coventry, the trust which runs Coventry Transport Museum, said: “This was a fantastic moment for everyone involved. Thrust SSC has lived permanently at Coventry Transport Museum since it was acquired in 2001, four years after it smashed the World Land Speed Record in the Black Rock Desert – and this was the first time it had moved since its arrival.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be giving both Thrust SSC and Thrust 2 a new home in their own specially designed Biffa Award Land Speed Record Gallery, where they will be joined by an all-new 4D Land Speed Record simulator – the whole thing is set to be a real ‘WOW’ for visitors old and new.”
The relocation manoeuvre was managed by Leicester-based MFH Construction Projects, and the moves were undertaken by Collett & Sons Ltd, a Halifax-based company specialising in transport, heavy lift, marine services and transport consulting.
Visitors will be able to see Thrust SSC and Thrust 2 in their new Land Speed Record Gallery from February 2015 onwards. The new gallery has been supported by Biffa Award, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT), which utilises landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.

The Transport Museum redevelopment is also funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Garfield Weston Foundation.

World War One warship role for Focus Consultants

Heritage and exhibition specialists at Focus Consultants are part of the team restoring the only surviving ship from the World War One Gallipoli campaign so that it can be opened up to the public.
HMS M.33 is one of Britain’s three surviving Royal Navy First World War warships and is currently in a dry dock in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, next to HMS Victory.
With the help of Focus, the restoration project secured almost £1.8 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and now work has begun to bring the ship back to former glory and allow the public to tour her in 2015, in time for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign she took part in.
Focus, which has its headquarters in Nottingham and branches in London, Leicester, and in Boston and Aubourn in Lincolnshire, has been appointed as cost consultant and CDM (construction, design and management) coordinator for the scheme.
“This is the latest in a number of schemes that Focus is currently involved in around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard,” said Focus Associate Eleanor Clarke. “Working with Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust and the International Boatbuilding Training College, we are project manager and quantity surveyor on a development to restore and refurbish Boathouse 4 and create a new £5.5 million Boatbuilding and Heritage Skills Training Centre.
“We are delighted to have now been appointed on another scheme in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This project will bring HMS M.33 back to life and will enable visitors to go aboard this historic warship for the first time and explore the stories of those who fought on board.”
M.33 - a floating gun platform built with the sole aim of hammering targets ashore – became surplus to requirements in the 1980s and was bought by Hampshire County Council in 1990. For nearly 20 years, the gunship has been slowly undergoing restoration work.
But now the project is stepping up a gear with a £2.4m restoration which is being paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and a Hampshire County Council grant to the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
Since its creation in 1994, Focus has helped to secure more than £925 million of grant assistance for a range of projects and businesses across the UK and delivered more than £1.0 billion worth of projects and programmes – making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.
It has worked on a range of high-profile projects in the arts, heritage and tourism sector, including some of the major museums across the UK, and important historical and ecclesiastical sites.

J Tomlinson lands ground-breaking solar power role

Construction, maintenance and energy efficiency expert J Tomlinson has been appointed as part of a pioneering community solar investment project.
Chase Community Solar, a community benefit society in Staffordshire, is believed to be the first scheme in the UK aiming to put solar panels on the roofs of council houses funded by a community share offer.
The project aims to raise at least £400,000 to install solar panels on up to 400 council-owned bungalows in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire.
Energy efficiency experts at J Tomlinson have been selected to fit the panels, which are designed to help council tenants cut their energy bills through free electricity generated by the solar photovoltaic panels.
The integrated building solutions company, which is based in Beeston, Nottingham and has a network of regional offices including a presence in Burton-on-Trent, has considerable expertise in the field of PV panels, having fitted more than 40,000 panels over the past four years on a range of buildings including schools, offices, social housing, sheltered housing and private homes.
Chief executive of J Tomlinson, Mark Davis, said: “Cannock Chase is the second most deprived area in Staffordshire after Stoke-on-Trent, with high levels of fuel poverty. Council tenants benefiting from the solar panels can expect to save up to £250 a year on their energy bills.
“As a company that offers energy efficient solutions as well as energy generation technologies, J Tomlinson is very pleased to be a part of the team involved in this pioneering community solar investment project, which is the first of its kind in the country.”
The firm currently works in the area for Stafford Borough Council and housing associations Midland Heart, Trent & Dove Housing, Bromford Housing and Accord Housing Association on servicing, maintenance and repair contracts.
The company has previously installed photovoltaic panels for Trent & Dove Housing on their head office in Burton-on-Trent, and is involved in gas servicing, maintenance and repairs for the group.
Investors in Chase Community Solar, which is supported by Cannock Chase Council, are being offered a forecast annual return of 7% for the 20-year lifetime of the scheme, with a minimum investment of just £100. Tax relief of 30% under the Enterprise Investment Scheme is also expected to be available. Returns are generated by the government’s Feed-in Tariff subsidy, and any excess funds will be used to build up a local community benefit fund.
Mike Kinghan, chair of Chase Community Solar, said: “We believe this is the first community energy project in the UK focusing on council house tenants. If it’s successful it will blaze the way for further community energy projects with councils and other social housing providers. There are many more social housing roofs across the UK and there is no reason why every suitable roof should not host solar PV.”
The next launch night for the scheme takes place in Lichfield on Tuesday November 25th in the Lichfield Room, Wade Street Church (Frog Lane entrance), WS13 6HL, at 7.30pm.
J Tomlinson, which is a privately owned company founded in the 1950s, has a substantial heritage and wealth of experience in delivering integrated building solutions tailored to both public and private sector clients.

Mount Kilimanjaro climb for MD of BSP Consulting

BSP Consulting MD David Sumner is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity next month.

David will be part of a 30-strong group of people tackling the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

“Not only will it be an immense physical challenge to climb a peak that is 19,341 feet above sea level, it will also be an extremely personal one because I am undertaking it to raise money for two causes that are very close to my heart,” said David, who heads up the East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering firm that he co-founded in 1999.

“My wife Pat has been living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for around 20 years. My aim is to support research into this debilitating condition – in particular, research that is looking at repairing myelin. Myelin is the coating surrounding the nerve fibres of the central nervous system. In MS it is destroyed, which interferes with the transmission of nerve signals and triggers the wide-ranging symptoms of multiple sclerosis.”

David is climbing with three fellow members of Plumtree Cricket Club - Steve Daft, Patrick Shortt and Tony Westbrook – and the challenge will kickstart fundraising for an appeal to develop a second ground at Plumtree in Nottinghamshire, so the club can provide the best facilities for disabled cricketers and encourage more young players, and those who are less able, to take part in the game.

“I am passionate about cricket. I have been lucky to have played the sport since I was a schoolboy, and I would like to encourage those who are less able or less fortunate to enjoy and play cricket too,” added David.

BSP Consulting has its headquarters at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield. It operates across the UK, providing a comprehensive range of services to all sectors of the construction industry from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

£½ million grant secured by Focus Consultants for village hall scheme

Funding experts at Focus Consultants have secured £½ million to help a rural community build a new village hall. The £456,225 Big Lottery Grant will enable Mareham le Fen Village Hall near Boston in Lincolnshire to replace a 100-year-old tin and timber hall with a modern, more central facility. The news, which comes on top of an earlier £43,775 Big Lottery Grant also secured by Focus, has special significance for one Focus employee, who grew up in the village, has family living there and who played a key role in helping to secure the grant.

“Focus as a company has helped to achieve millions of pounds in grants for numerous organisations ranging from major museums to large companies, but it was particularly pleasing to learn that we’d successfully secured the Big Lottery Grant for Mareham le Fen, which is the village I grew up in from the age of five and the place that my mum still lives,” said Focus building surveyor Chris Smith, who works in the Boston office of Focus.

“When I heard the village was raising money for a new village hall, I offered our services as consultants, and I am delighted that everything is pointing to a successful conclusion to the plans to build a new community facility in Mareham le Fen.”

Chris worked with members of the funding team at Nottingham-based Focus Consultants to put together reports for the Big Lottery Grant bid.

Chairman of Mareham le Fen Village Hall Committee, Graham Beacham, said: “We were delighted by the news that the village has been awarded this Big Lottery Grant, and would like to thank the team at Focus for their hard work and expertise.”

The village hall committee, which has also successfully secured grants from Lincolnshire County Council and East Lindsey District Council, is now waiting to hear from other funding sources it has applied to before embarking on building work. The committee hopes that building work may start in spring, with completion six months later.

It is planned that the new hall will be used seven days a week to host dance and fitness sessions, arts and crafts activities, a luncheon club, social events, and meetings. The new hall will also be a venue for private functions such as weddings and christenings, and will be more central for the village, safer and with access to car parking, and will be wheelchair friendly.

In 2012, Focus Consultants successfully helped villagers in Heydour in Lincolnshire to secure £458,133 funding from the Big Lottery Fund to build a new community centre. The money allowed the village to tear down the old World War One officers’ mess hut and replace it with a modern and versatile community facility. The £750,000 project was completed a year later.

Focus, which also has offices in Aubourn, Lincolnshire, in Holborn, London, and in Leicester, is a specialist in helping clients to secure grants, and since its creation in 1994, the company has helped to secure more than £925 million of grant assistance for a range of projects and businesses across the UK and delivered more than £1.0 billion worth of projects and programmes – making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.

BSP Consulting uses its engineering expertise from Canary Wharf to Cornwall

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting has been appointed to work on two key projects in Canary Wharf and Cornwall.

The company is working on a scheme to improve bathing water quality off the Cornish coast, and is also part of the team that is paving the way for a major new residential development in Canary Wharf, London.
Tunnelling experts Active Tunnelling has appointed BSP on both schemes to design shafts and pipe-jacked tunnels.

Principal engineer at BSP, Paul Hammersley, said: “These two sites are miles apart, both in terms of distance and location. However, in both tunnel and shaft design BSP’s expertise has been very important to help ensure the success of the schemes.”

The Cornish project for South West Water is part of a £3 million investment in bathing water quality at East Looe, which is expected to benefit the tourism industry across South East Cornwall. It involves building a 1,040 cubic metre underground storage tank in Liskeard. The extra capacity in the sewerage network will reduce the number of storm discharges into the East Looe River during extremely wet weather, and is designed to improve bathing water quality ahead of the European Union's revised Bathing Water Directive coming into effect in 2015. Construction work is due to be completed by early 2015.

An additional 300 cubic metre storage tank is also being constructed at a privately owned site on land next to the A38 and is connected to the main shaft by a pipe jacked tunnel. Shafts have also been designed by BSP engineers for Modbury and Ivybridge as part of this scheme.

Meanwhile, BSP is also working with Active Tunnelling at a site in Canary Wharf. The company’s engineers have designed pipe-jacked tunnels and shafts so that existing foul and surface water infrastructure can be diverted around the site to allow the construction of a multi-storey apartment block. Newfoundland is set to become a visual landmark not only for Canary Wharf but for the city of London, and will resemble the famous ‘Gherkin’ in style.

BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and has branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2014. The company employs around 50 staff, and operates across the UK.

The Obar in Leicester brings tastes from around the world as it unveils a new range of craft beers

Craft beer fans in Leicester are in for a treat after the Obar in Braunstone Gate was given a revamp to become a specialist craft beer venue.
The bar now has one of the most extensive craft beer selections in the city, with over 20 different bottles, 14 beers on draught and two ales. The range includes beers brewed by local breweries, as well as craft ales and beers from as far away as Iceland and the USA.
At the same time, the trendy bar has been given a facelift and begun offering a new bar menu created by the Smokehouse restaurant above the Obar, which opened permanently earlier this year having initially launched as a pop-up venue.
General manager at the Obar, Phil Hewitt, said: “The craft beer we’ve been offering upstairs in the Smokehouse has been going down a treat, and in general terms craft beer has been rising in popularity, so we decided to give the Obar a fresh look and introduce a wider range of craft beers.
“We believe we’ve created something different – not just for Braunstone Gate but for the city of Leicester too. We plan to rotate the beer we offer, as well as feature guest craft beers, so that we can serve a dynamic range and appeal to all tastes.”
Phil has been working with chef Liam Watson to source beers that complement the food being served at the Obar, as well as beers that are likely to be popular with punters.
The venue has introduced four house beers from London-based brewery Meantime, a rotating selection of up to three local cask ales, a range of imported American keg beers, and will serve a wide selection of imported and home-brewed bottled craft beers from Europe and the US, including items from breweries such as Camden Town Brewery, BrewDog, Crafty Dan, Innis & Gunn, Blue Moon Brewing Co, Goose Island, Brooklyn Brewery, Anchor, Founders and Sly Fox.
It will also serve Orchard Pig Explorer Cider, produced in the West Country.
The Obar, which is part of the East Midlands-based Orange tree group of pubs, bars and venues, was opened in 2001 as the group’s third venue. It also operates the Orange tree in High Street, Leicester, the Lansdowne in London Road, Leicester, late-night venue the Basement in Wellington Street, Leicester, as well as the Orange tree and the Kelso in Loughborough, and the Orange tree in Nottingham.
Director Ben Hings, who runs the group with Gareth Smith, said: “Innovative flavours of beer developed by breweries have become very popular with beer connoisseurs and bar-goers in general, and we’ve worked hard to create a range that we hope will appeal to drinkers in the Braunstone Gate area, and will also encourage people to come from other areas of the city to try the craft beers.
“After getting fantastic feedback last year when we opened the Smokehouse as a pop-up venue above the Obar, we launched the restaurant permanently earlier this year and it’s now become a popular place to eat in the city. As a natural extension, we’ve recently begun offering lighter, smaller meals from the Smokehouse menu downstairs at the Obar and the new range of craft beers we’ve introduced fits very well with these dishes.”The Obar is open from 4.30pm to 2am daily, and is based at 59-61 Braunstone Gate. East Midlands food and drink sector comes together at event

One of the region’s leading food and drink sector organisations, The Food and Drink Forum, will be hosting a network dinner event next month.
The Food and Drink Forum, which was founded in 1998, has members across the East Midlands and in partnership with the Food and Drink iNet, aims to stimulate and support the sustainable growth and development of the food and drink industry in the region.

This year’s annual members’ supper and networking event will take place on Wednesday 19th November at Southwell Racecourse, Rolleston in Nottinghamshire. Up to 150 people connected to the industry from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire are expected to attend.

A range of key speakers will be speaking, and the event will feature a supper of ingredients donated and supplied by local food and drink manufacturers.

“The Food and Drink Forum’s annual members’ supper is the chance for people who work in the food and drink sector across the region to come together, share their news, discover more about the latest issues affecting the industry and to network and make valuable contacts,” said Food and Drink Forum general manager Fay Davies.

“This year we have chosen a new venue, at Southwell Racecourse, and have developed a new format separate from our AGM, as we aim to create an informal environment conducive for business networking between members.”

Sponsored by the Food and Drink iNet (Innovation Network), the members’ supper runs from 5pm to 9pm and will include presentations from a number of food and drink manufacturers in the region. Guests will include members and representatives from partner organisations such as local enterprise partnerships, UK Trade & Investment, chambers of commerce and other key suppliers to support business growth.

Tickets are available for £35 (plus VAT), however Food and Drink Forum members receive a complimentary ticket, and exhibition space is available for £50 (plus VAT) for companies looking to further promote their services. For more details email enquiries@foodanddrinkforum.co.uk
