Printing innovation brings company new clients

A company specialising in producing and printing flexible packaging materials for the food and drink industry is on the verge of signing some big name clients thanks to support from the Food and Drink iNet
Primopost, based in Buxton in Derbyshire, has received an award from the Food and Drink iNet so it can improve the print quality produced from its flexographic machinery. Primopost’s customer-base of blue chip end-users, such as United Biscuits and Northern Foods, have been impressed with the improvements in quality Primopost has made which has been rewarded by additional contracts and interest.
The iNet provided innovation advice and guidance worth £10,000. Primopost will now match this with its own funding. It is the second iNet award for Primopost, which earlier this year was given £5,000 worth of support in connection with the same project.
Andrew Foster, managing director of the company which employs 92 people, said the support was essential to enable the improvements to be made. “Without the award from the Food and Drink iNet this project would have been extremely difficult to get off the ground. We really appreciate the support we have been given from everyone.”
Primopost, set up in 1987, specialises in producing flexible packaging material for the food and drink industry. It offers flexographic print, lamination and surface coatings on all materials coming into contact with food.
Using flexography is more cost-effective for a client than the more expensive method of printing using gravure, but historically the print is of a lesser quality. The project now being undertaken by Primopost, with iNet support, will improve the quality of flexography printing, by bringing it closer to gravure standards but without losing the low-cost benefits.
“By improving the print quality of our printing machines we can compete with those using the gravure process but our lower cost means we are more attractive to customers,” said Andrew. “Our process will be particularly attractive to a client wanting smaller volumes produced.”
Andrew estimated that the improved printing process would enable Primopost to increase its turnover by around 20%.
Andrew Butterwick, Food and Drink iNet director, said: “We were very impressed by Primopost’s project. This innovation will enable them to compete with bigger players and at the same time still offer a cost-effective printing solution for the food and drink sector.”
The iNet helps food and drink firms engage expertise from academia, research institutions and specialist business advice for innovation projects to develop new ideas, new products, new processes and to help companies grow.  50% of the equivalent cash value of the support must be contributed by the company.
Funded by East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Food and Drink iNet co-ordinates innovation support for businesses, universities and individuals working in the food and drink sector in the East Midlands. One of four regional iNets, it has developed an effective network to link academic and private sector expertise and knowledge with local food and drink business innovation needs.
The Food and Drink iNet also aims to build on the tradition of innovation in the food and drink industry in the region by helping to create opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, and to help research, develop and implement new products, markets, services and processes. It is managed by a consortium, led by the Food & Drink Forum and including Food Processing Faraday, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Lincoln, and the University of Nottingham. It is based at Southglade Food Park, Nottingham, with advisors covering the East Midlands region.

Trade organisation helps pickle producer to secure supermarket listing


Quirky pickles, preserves and chutney producer The Pickled Village won an order to supply to Waitrose after exhibiting under the East Midlands Fine Foods banner at a specialist fine food trade show.
The company, based at Bulwick, near Corby, caught the eye of buyers from the retail group at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair in London, having joined the stand run by East Midlands Fine Foods.
Weeks later, a number of products from The Pickled Village range were on the shelves of four branches of Waitrose in Oadby, Lutterworth, Stamford and Peterborough - with plans to roll out further products in stores regionally and nationally.
The order was the company’s first with a major multiple, and came less than a year after The Pickled Village founder Camille Ortega McLean expanded by taking on people to help her with production.
“Small companies just could not afford to go to shows like Speciality & Fine Food Fair on their own, and that’s where the major buyers go, so we were very grateful for the opportunity to showcase The Pickled Village on the East Midlands Fine Foods stand,” said Camille.
As a result of the order, the firm is considering increasing capacity by introducing a second shift.
“We produce 400 jars a day now, but we can increase to 900 a day by going in two shifts,” explained Camille.
Briony Clarke, operations manager at business support organisation The Food and Drink Forum, which runs East Midlands Fine Foods, said: “The aim of East Midlands Fine Foods is to support speciality food and drink producers, and we are delighted to hear about the order won by The Pickled Village after the firm exhibited under our banner at such an important trade fair.
“Our expertise can help producers to make the most of exhibiting at trade and consumer events.”  
The Pickled Village, which now employs six people, specialises in producing quirkily-named takes on traditional pickles, preserves, chutneys, relishes and marmalades.
Among the products listed by Waitrose are The Red Rapscallion (red onion marmalade with redcurrants and chillis), The Earth and Fire (a beetroot chutney with horseradish and chillis), The Traditional Piccalilli (chunky and crunchy), The Indulgent One (Strawberry preserve), The Bourbon Blues (a blueberry conserve with a splash of Bourbon) and The Undecided Breakfast (three different flavours of marmalade layered in one jar - for those who cannot make up their minds).
“We have many local customers and they are just as important as Waitrose, but this order is good news for the company,” said Camille.
“East Midlands Fine Foods was the key to us gaining it, as without their help we probably wouldn’t have been at the trade show and the Waitrose buyers wouldn’t have spotted us.”

Bumper Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market in Nottingham for December 2010

Fans of Nottingham’s Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market are in for a festive treat this month with an extra three days of trading.

The market will run as usual on the third Friday and Saturday of the month on December 17th and 18th, but will be extended to Sunday 19th, Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st December to give shoppers extra time to buy festive food and foodie gifts from regional producers and suppliers.
The market, organised by East Midlands Fine Foods in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, has been running monthly in the Old Market Square since April 2007.
Stalls sell a wide range of quality regional products including cheese, pickles, meat, fishcakes, beer, game, fudge, cakes, vegetables, sweet and savoury pies, jam and even dog biscuits.
“The Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market is a great place to stock up on Christmas essentials and luxuries, as well as a good place to source items for gift hampers and presents,” said Jo Taylor, of East Midlands Fine Foods. “At the same time, it’s supporting producers and suppliers across the East Midlands, and helping the local economy. A lot of shoppers like to shop locally at Christmas, and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
This month the market will temporarily relocate to the area in the Old Market Square at the bottom of King Street and alongside the fountains as part of the on-going Christmas festivities in the square.
Some 17 stalls will be in place for the first two days of the market, with 11 of them spending five days at the event.

New IT for commercial laundry paves way for 24/7 customer service

 
A commercial laundry which cleans workwear for companies throughout the East Midlands, serving the food and drink industry, is taking a major leap forward in customer service with the introduction of an innovative IT project.
Derbyshire-based Giltbrook Cleaners is able to bring in the new technology thanks to a support package from the Food and Drink iNet, worth nearly £5,500. The company will match this with its own funding, valuing the project at nearly £11,000.
The new IT will create a customer portal on the Giltbook company website, at http://www.giltbrookworkwear.co.uk/. This discreet area of the site will enable clients to log in and track their garments in real time.
Chris Jackson, CEO at the Ilkeston-based laundry, said the new customer relationship management system represented a huge leap in customer service.
“Many of our clients are in the food and drink sector, often accredited with the likes of BRC (British Retail Consortium) regulations, so they have to show due diligence in all areas, including that of cleaning their workforce’s garments,” he said. “Our new system means that at a moment’s notice they can check what stage any garment is at and gather all the necessary information.”
Mr Jackson said the customer portal would also be of use to those working out of hours. “For example, there may be a hygiene manager running a number of sites who is on a nightshift, who wants to track down and check up on the cleaning process. We are not here 24 hours a day but, thanks to the customer portal, the information will be.”
He added that the system would enable clients to set targets and, crucially, would show up any discrepancies. “As with many systems, it will be particularly good at showing anomalies. For example, if work garments haven’t been sent to us for cleaning and should have been, this information and evidence will be on hand.”
The new customer portal is currently being developed and is due to go live in February. Mr Jackson said the Food and Drink iNet award had made the project possible. “Without the financial award it would have been a far lesser project. Moreover, the support and advice we have had from the iNet has been absolutely crucial.”
Giltbrook Cleaners is a family-run business, which has been operating for more than 60 years and employs 45 people. Its clients include a number of companies from the East Midland Food and Drink Forum, who in turn supply big name food retailers, such as Tesco.
“We know this new customer portal is something our clients will welcome. All this information has always been available to them, but this way it will be there 24/7 in the format they require,” he added.

Sherwood Truck & Van Ltd X-cited by the X Factor

Commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck & Van Ltd is getting behind One Direction’s bid to win the X Factor with a huge banner declaring support for the boy band.

Band member Louis Tomlinson, 18, is the son of Mark Tomlinson – a van salesman for Sherwood Truck & Van.

As the TV talent show heads towards the final, and with the band one of the favourites, Sherwood has thrown its support behind the lads.

Meanwhile, Mark has become a very popular member of staff….with colleagues hoping he can get autographs of Louis and his band mates, as well as the other contestants.

“I’ve become a bit of a local celebrity myself among my workmates,” he laughs. “There’s lots of talk about X Factor, and everybody wants me to tell them a story about what’s happening behind the scenes. There’s always some little bit of gossip that I can bring back.

“I am chief autograph hunter at the moment. I have got dozens and dozens.”

Mark, who has worked at Sherwood for the past six months, said even workmates who previously hadn’t been watching the show were now fans.

“They really enjoy watching it,” he says. “It’s really interesting when you know someone in it.”

Sherwood Truck & Van Ltd has placed the banner outside its Sheffield branch in Highfield Lane in support of One Direction, where it is already generating quite a bit of interest from passers by.

Helen Waterfall, Sherwood Truck & Van’s managing director, said: “We’re really excited for Louis and his family, and we wanted to show that we’re all rooting for One Direction to go all the way in the X Factor.”

Mark and Louis’ mum Johannah, of Bessacarr, Doncaster, have watched their son perform as part of the boy band every week – and Mark admits that as the weeks go by it is becoming more and more nerve-wracking.

“It’s one of those things you wouldn’t miss for the world,” says Mark. “We have been every week. It’s getting progressively more nerve-wracking. We think they have got a really good chance. We have been keeping an eye on what the bookies say and the lads have consistently been up there in the top three.”

Christmas festivities at Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen

Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire is giving customers a festive gift with a 10% off shopping day on Thursday 16th December.

The discount will apply to everything on sale in the shop at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, for one day only.

“We’d like to reward our loyal customers by giving them the opportunity to take advantage of our 10% off promotion on Thursday 16th December,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop. “It’s our Christmas present to them!”

Croots is raising money for local children’s charity Treats through the sale of Christmas trees this year by donating £1 for every tree sold to the charity, which is its nominated good cause for the year.

The fir trees are grown locally and fit in with Croots’ policy of selling local and regional produce where possible.

As part of its festive selection, Croots is also creating a range of Christmas sausages, featuring mulled wine sausages and fig-flavoured sausages.

The store at is also adding a seasonal twist to its own-brand farmyard range of beers, with a Rudolph ale – a dark ale brewed by Nutbrook Brewery.

Croots is currently taking orders for turkeys and other Christmas meats, and has a wide range of festive fare on sale, including chocolates.

Croots is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. The 10% off day runs from 9am to 5pm on Thursday 16th December.

The prize-winning product, which also won a two star Gold Great Taste Award in July 2010, was announced as the winner of the vegan category in the awards run by Cook Vegetarian! magazine.

The magazine said: “Not only one of the best vegan curry sauces we’ve ever tried but one of the best curry sauces available. Its complexity of flavours makes its taste truly sensational.”

Anila’s cooking has always been popular with friends and family, and in the early 1990s she began selling jars of curry sauce on a very small scale in her local community in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. She sold all 80 jars at her first fair at Weybridge in 1992. Phone calls from very satisfied customers followed, and Anila began fulfilling small orders.

In 1997 she was made redundant from a job as a PA and decided to seize the opportunity to form her own company to develop Anila’s Authentic Sauces.

Put a smile on a child’s face with a Croots Farm Shop Christmas tree

Derbyshire farm shop Croots is raising money for local children’s charity Treats through the sale of Christmas trees.

The Duffield farm shop is donating £1 for every tree sold to the charity, which is its nominated good cause for the year.

The fir trees are grown locally and fit in with Croots’ policy of selling local and regional produce where possible.

As part of its festive selection, Croots is also creating a range of Christmas sausages, featuring mulled wine sausages and fig-flavoured sausages.

The store at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, is also adding a seasonal twist to its own-brand farmyard range of beers, with a Rudolph ale – a dark ale brewed by Nutbrook Brewery.

Croots, run by Steve Croot, is currently taking orders for turkeys and other Christmas meats.

“We have supported Treats Children’s Charity for the past year and are hoping to raise a little extra from the sale of Christmas trees, which is something we are doing for the first time this year,” said Steve.

Winners announced in the Food and Drink iNet Innovation Awards 2010

A Derbyshire fish and chip shop which made huge strides in improving its environmental credentials has been crowned The Food and Drink Forum Innovation Champion 2010 in The Food and Drink iNet Innovation Awards.

Fairfield Plaice in Buxton introduced a range of environmentally friendly initiatives including installing a dramatically more efficient frying range, using recyclable packaging and buying fish from sustainable sources and chips from a firm that uses recycled waste water.

Now the company has been rewarded by receiving the top accolade at The Food and Drink iNet Innovation Awards 2010, presented at an awards ceremony and dinner supported by Derby College at The Roundhouse, Pride Park, Derby, and hosted by journalist John Sergeant and weather presenter Des Coleman.

The judges said: “When choosing the overall winner we were looking for the entry that stands out as having the wow factor. After much deliberation and discussion the Innovation Champion has been awarded to Fairfield Plaice for the way in which it has taken a traditional industry and turned it on its head to become one of the first environmentally friendly fish and chip shops in the UK.”

Fairfield Plaice, run by Carl Heery, also took the Nottingham Trent University Award for Most Innovative Business in the Wider Food Sector jointly with Cookies of Oakham, Rutland.

Of Cookies, a sandwich bar and catering company which diversified to develop a range of fruit-based sauces, the judges said: “The new products developed by Cookies of Oakham are very different from what the company typically manufactures. The company covered all bases including completing detailed product and market research in order to give their products the best possible chance of success”

Of Fairfield Plaice, the judges said: “We liked the way this project effectively combined a reduction in running costs with working towards the green agenda. It was very innovative for a fish and chip takeaway to embrace the effect they have on the environment and incorporate new thinking and policies into their business.”

University of Lincoln Award for Most Innovative Small to Medium Sized Food and Drink Manufacturer was presented to Thornbridge Brewery, Bakewell, Derbyshire.

The judges praised the brewery for the way in which it employed a centrifuge process more commonly used in the wine industry to manufacture fresh beer in a bottle, which is neither filtered nor pasteurised, saying: “We were pleased to see a previous category winner in the Innovation Awards still innovating and creating opportunity for themselves. Using a cross sector approach has given the company commercial advantage which they have used to bring a new dimension to a very traditional industry.”


Food Processing Faraday Award for Most Innovative Large Food and Drink Manufacturer went to British Sugar, Newark, Nottinghamshire, which used the widely acclaimed and well researched thinking system called Go MAD at its Newark site to enhance its business performance. The training programme, positioned as a business improvement, was integrated within the factory strategy rather than an isolated training scheme, providing employees with a flexible structure that enables them to develop thinking and problem solving in an easy to understand and practical way. The programme allowed employees to achieve greater clarity of thinking, increased speed of thinking, improved creative thinking and consistency in achieving personal and business goals.

The judges said: “We were pleased to see a large, well established business using innovative and new tools to develop their staff as well as deliver bottom line benefits. We were impressed by the commitment of all the team at Newark - top to bottom - to new thinking.”

Campden BRI Award for Most Innovative Business Across the Food and Drink Supply Chain was presented to Fresh Logistics, based at East Midlands Airport, Castle Donington. The firm of chilled parcel couriers identified a gap in the market to provide a service for food manufacturers looking to distribute small quantities of high quality products requiring careful handling and temperature controlled conditions. In response, the company created a bespoke network which caters to the needs of small craft producers bringing together the best food from around the UK and delivering it safely and securely. The service includes the UK’s first overnight temperature controlled parcel delivery network.

The judges commented: “We liked the fact that in developing an innovative solution to a real business need, Fresh Logistics managed to reduce the environmental impact and to cut down on waste. We were also impressed by Fresh Logistics’ plans to continue to innovate in the future.”

CenFRA Award for Most Innovative Research Project went to eminate Ltd based at BioCity, Nottingham, for the successful manipulation of salt crystals that resulted in the development of a new ingredient for the food industry known as Soda-Lo. Soda-Lo enables a reduction in salt use of between 25 and 50 percent across a wide range of food products. This has been achieved by altering the size, form and structure of salt particles in order to increase their saltiness, thereby reducing the amount of salt needed to achieve the same flavour profile.

The judges said: “We were impressed by this research project as it has provided a new product that can reduce the salt use in the food sector. We also feel that there could be a national need for this type of product specifically in addressing key issues facing the food sector such as the health agenda.”

Food and Drink iNet director Andrew Butterwick said: “I’d like to congratulate all the very worthy winners in the Food and Drink iNet Innovation Awards 2010, who illustrate the diverse and exciting range of innovation opportunities that are being developed in the East Midlands.”

Funded by East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Food and Drink iNet co-ordinates innovation support for businesses, universities and individuals working in the food and drink sector in the East Midlands. One of four regional iNets, it has developed an effective network to link academic and private sector expertise and knowledge with local food and drink business innovation needs.

The Food and Drink iNet also aims to build on the tradition of innovation in the food and drink industry in the region by helping to create opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, and to help research, develop and implement new products, markets, services and processes. It is managed by a consortium, led by The Food and Drink Forum and including Food Processing Faraday, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Lincoln, and the University of Nottingham. It is based at Southglade Food Park, Nottingham, with advisors covering the East Midlands region.

Dog website Champdogs welcomes litter restrictions announcement

The Kennel Club’s announcement on litter restrictions has been welcomed by the founder of a website that provides responsible dog breeders with the opportunity to showcase their dogs on the internet.

Mark Roach, managing director of Champdogs, hailed the news that, from 2012 the KC will normally register no more than four litters from any one bitch because of concerns that the current legal limit of six litters can potentially be detrimental to a bitch’s welfare, as a ‘positive step forward’.

And he called on the organisation to now turn the spotlight on the minimum age at which the KC registers a litter to a bitch.

“We are pleased that the Kennel Club has taken a positive step to help prevent the over breeding and exploitation of dogs,” said Mark. “This is not before time, however, and we at Champdogs have for many years applied a limit of four litters on our members.

“As the only recognised registrar of pedigree dogs in the UK, it is important that the KC sets a high standard and does not allow its registry to be exploited by puppy farmers and commercial breeders. This move will go some way to achieving that aim.

“We hope that the next step will be for the Kennel Club to review the minimum age at which they will register a litter to a bitch. We believe the blanket rule of 12 months for all breeds to be far too young. Ideally each breed should be considered differently as they all mature at different ages.”

Champdogs (www.champdogs.co.uk) was set up in 1999 and has almost 20,000 members. It positively promotes responsible and healthy dog breeding, and has strict conditions of membership to prevent puppy farmers and commercial breeders from using the firm’s facilities.

It also features a healthy discussion forum at www.champdogsforum.co.uk which runs alongside the main site.

Members on the forum have also welcomed the Kennel Club’s announcement.

Mark, who is based in Bingley, West Yorkshire, added: “The discussion on our forum indicates that the Kennel Club’s decision on litter restrictions is being hailed as a good move by responsible members of the dog world. We would now urge that attention is focused on the minimum age that the KC will register a litter to a bitch.

“At Champdogs, we apply a minimum age limit of 24 months at the date of whelping unless the relevant national breed club stipulates a different age.”

Open Days Held at Nottingham Language Academy

Individuals or businesses keen to find out more about the courses on offer at Nottingham Language Academy starting in the New Year are being invited to attend one of the open days being held in December and early January.

The language school, which is based at The Ropewalk in the city, offers modern language classes in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Japanese, as well as English as a foreign language.

Launched in September, Nottingham Language Academy runs classes during the day, evenings and at weekends, which are designed for people who want to improve their job prospects, travel and see the world, live and work abroad, gain a place at university or learn something new for the fun of it.

“In response to demand, we’ve announced three open days for December and two in January, which we hope will prove useful to any individuals who want to learn a new language or improve their language skills on a course starting in the New Year,” said Linda Walker, who runs Nottingham Language Academy.

“Tuition is also available to businesses that would like to improve the language skills of their staff.”

Open days are being held on Wednesday December 1st, Monday December 6th, Tuesday December 14th, Wednesday January 5th and Tuesday January 11th between 2pm and 7pm.

Sherwood Truck & Van Ltd is right on cue to help social project


East Midlands-based commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck & Van Ltd is helping to give disadvantaged youngsters a break by backing a unique project that uses snooker as a way of mentoring.

The company is sponsoring a converted bus run by the Stephen Harrison Academy in Sheffield - a not-for-profit social enterprise that uses Learning & Exercise Through Snooker (LETS) to enable disadvantaged groups and individuals to take part in sport and improve their quality of life.

The modified bus - which contains a snooker table and other games equipment - tours communities offering activity sessions, careers advice, and providing other useful information.

Sherwood Truck & Van, based at Blackwell, near Alfreton, Derbyshire, and with operations also in Lenton, Nottingham, Highfield Lane, Sheffield, and Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, is sponsoring the bus by providing free maintenance, servicing and storage.

“We are very pleased to support the bus used by the Stephen Harrison Academy as part of our commitment to local worthwhile causes,” said Sherwood Truck & Van managing director Helen Waterfall. “The bus is a unique facility that provides opportunities for young people, and we wish the project a successful future as it goes out on the road.”

The Stephen Harrison Academy (SHA) is a social enterprise aimed at providing mentoring programmes for people with learning difficulties, mental health difficulties, physical difficulties and disadvantaged children.

Run by professional snooker player Stephen Harrison, it is based at the Innovation Centre, Sheffield, and works in conjunction with groups such as the police and local authorities.

The Leyland Lynx single decker was converted earlier this year and has recently begun touring areas of the city and south Yorkshire, with plans to venture further afield.

“We are very grateful for the help that Sherwood Truck & Van has given us during these hard times. The support is fantastic and very much appreciated by us, and I’m sure by the young people who use our services,” said Stephen Harrison.
